How much do veterinarians earn in Hong Kong in 2026? I place GPs, emergency vets and specialists with clinics and hospitals across Hong Kong, and the ranges below reflect what is actually being offered and accepted in the market right now. All figures are indicative, in HKD per month, for permanent full time roles unless noted.

Emergency and critical care (ER) salaries

ER veterinarian, day shift (5 plus years of experience): HKD 110,000 to 140,000 per month. Day ER roles are competitive but more accessible, with a strong clinical foundation required for a high caseload environment.

ER veterinarian, night shift (5 plus years of experience): HKD 115,000 to 150,000 per month. The night premium reflects an acute shortage. Experienced night vets in Hong Kong are largely burned out or have left the market, and international candidates are increasingly essential.

ER head vet or lead: HKD 120,000 to 140,000 plus per month, often supplemented with performance incentives or production components. This profile, combining clinical leadership with team oversight, is rare.

General practice (GP) salaries

GP veterinarian with under 5 years of experience: HKD 60,000 to 90,000 per month. Clinics are increasingly selective, weighting cultural fit and work ethic alongside clinical skills.

GP veterinarian with 5 to 10 years of experience: HKD 90,000 to 120,000 per month. Experienced GPs are in consistent demand, though packages are more structured than during the boom years.

Senior GP veterinarian with 10 plus years of experience: HKD 100,000 plus per month, increasingly with production or revenue share components alongside base salary.

Locum and relief day rates

GP day shift locum: HKD 5,000 to 7,000 per shift. ER day shift locum: HKD 7,000 to 9,000 per shift. ER night shift locum: HKD 7,000 to 9,000 plus per shift. Locum availability is increasingly constrained, particularly for ER and night cover, and a maintained network of reliable locums has become a strategic asset for clinics.

What is driving these numbers

Hong Kong is in a post boom correction. Clinic numbers grew faster than revenue, margins tightened, and clinics have become cost conscious. At the same time, the pool of experienced vets willing to work nights has been depleted. International candidates holding qualifications registrable with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Hong Kong, particularly from South Africa, the UK and Australia, are now the most consistent pipeline for ER and night shift roles.
